Moving on #10

We decided to start looking for a house, this apartment was too small, it only had two rooms and a bath. The bathroom only had a shower and sometimes I like to take a bath, it is so relaxing. , and besides our landlord comes in when we're not home. What we did to see for sure is stick a piece of paper in the door, where he can't see it. Sure enough we came home and the paper was on the floor, he doesn't take anything but I don't like him snooping in my things. It only took two weeks to find a house, it was just a little way out of town.

We both were still working at this time and I was expecting our first baby, the baby was due some time in September. I was given a shower by Wayne s mom and my mom, I was excited because I was new at this. My mom does not drink any more, she has cancer, the doctor told her to give up drinking and cigarettes, she choose to keep smoking.

Wayne was laid off from work right after we moved in, I was really worried that we would loose the house, so I would have to keep working. I was hoping he would find work because I wanted to be home with the baby. I had a normal pregnancy, no problems and I worked up to the time I went into the hospital and Wayne had found another job. I was glad I took a class in motherhood and they taught us what to do when we went into labor at the hospital. I called Wayne s work and he came home, we arrived at the hospital at 4:30 am and I had Doug the next afternoon at 2:30pm, boy I was glad that it was over. My son weighed 9 lbs. 7 1/2 oz and was 20 1/2 inches long. He was born with a congenial birth defect, his left ear did not form properly and there was no ear canal. To me he was made from our love, perfect in all ways and so beautiful.

We almost lost Doug, when he was two and a half months old, he almost suffocated, the name for it now is "SIDS". We were over to Waynes moms playing cards and I had put Doug on the bed for a nap. We checked him often, but I went in for the last time, I picked him up and turned him over, he went double in my hands, we called the ambulance, no 911 then. Wayne s mom took him from me, I was hysterical, his mom was a nurse, thank the Lord, she helped save his life and at this time Doug was splotchy blue.

At the hospital they put him in a oxygen tent, we stayed for hours with him, praying and crying. Doug had a habit of sucking two of his fingers, only once in a while, so when he began to suck them I knew he was going to make it. We had gotten his picture taken at the studio and did not want to pick them up if he did not make it, so next day we went to pick them up. This happened two weeks before Christmas, so again we did not put the tree up until he came home. His crib went into our room for a couple months. We were thankful that he had come out of this without any problems, especially without breathing for a period of time, maybe this is why he is such a smart kid.

This was one tradgey in this house, the second one happened to our neighbor boy, Chuckie, it was the next summer. He had just started high school, he was so looking forward to it. When we first met the neighbors, right after moving in, we liked them. Chuckie was their only child, his brother died of lukemia at five years old. Lucy, their mother, had adopted another boy, Eddie and a little girl. Chuckies mom said he had just come home from school and was sitting at the table having a snack. The plumbers, outside were drilling for a new well and yelled in the window and ask if Chuckie could give them a hand. I wish his mom would of said no and this would not of happened. They wanted Chuckie to hold a very long pipe and guide it into the caseing below ground, one other man was on the lawn holding it also. All of a sudden the two were thrown into the hole, because the pipe had hit the high tension lines, electricity ran down the pipe and came out Chuckie in three places, the other man only received burns. Chuckie had died instantly, the plumbers went crazy trying to revive him, to no avail. I had seen it all, because I heard the men working and went to see what was going on, I saw them holding the pipe and guiding it into the hole, when all of a sudden both of them went flying into the hole, I did not know what was going on. I wish I would of went home and not seen them bring Chuckie out of the hole, I did not know how much I had liked him until then.

His mom had been next door out of sight of her house, they called to her to come quick, the tone they used brought her running. They told her what had happened, she fell across Chuckie begging him to wake up and one man had to pull her up off him. Now all she had left was her two adopted children, she became very depressed after this, I felt sorry for them. We sold the house and moved back into town, too many sad memories in this house.

Oh! I am so sorry for the accident that happened to Chuckie. How sad for his family. But, so glad that Doug survived SIDS and is fine now. I suppose we all have good times and bad times, but when you start writing down your memories, some aren't so happy. It must be difficult to ponder over all the sad memories.

As always, I will be looking forward to the next installment. And thanks for sharing your memories with us.

Oh, my goodness, Margaret, what a terrible story about Chuckie! But I am certainly glad your little boy survived SIDS, and has grown up so smart.

Like Ann said, we all have happy and sad memories, and the happy ones make up for the sad ones.

I look forward to the next installment of your story.

Happy March!

Renie

How tragic about that poor young man and such an ordeal for you to see all that and almost lose your own son. What a life story dear Margaret. Bless you for sharing this with us.

How horrible for your neighbor. And for you seeing what was happening. So happy your little boy survived. But it must have been a constant worry until he got a little older.

Sorry I'm just now getting around to commenting. I read the post, but it seems every time I got ready to leave a comment, something came up and I had to get off the computer. Sat. I was gone most of the day. Monday and today have been very, very busy. Like I've said before, 20 years ago, I could get a lot more accomplished in a morning than what I can now. So I'm assuming I've just slowed way down.LOL

I wouldn't know what it would be like to live out in the country. Although the house we lived in before we moved here was almost like living in the country. Behind our house was a field of corn. Also a bull would get out once in a while. That would cause a little excitement. A state route went through the town, but that was about all it had. Also had one grocery with a post office in the grocery. We were about 8 miles to a doctor and about 20 to a hospital.

We didn't have water under pressure until about 1958, got our bathroom around the Fall of 1962, and moved here to this house in Dec. of 62. The house we were living in had about 600 square feet and was not insulated. We about froze out butts off in the Winter. And cooked in the summer. But it was home. LOL

When we moved here we had about 1,650 square feet and a bath and a half. We felt like we had a mansion. LOL But still didn't have central air conditioning until around 1980. Just had room air conditioners.

Well have to go, time to start some supper. I think tonight we're going to have some of those dinner franks with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes and some kind of fruit for dessert. Don't know if the Granddaughter will eat it or not.

She has a Birthday this coming Thursday, she'll be 9 and on Sat. our next to the youngest daughter will be 47, Grandson in Fl is turning 26 on the 8th. and his sister will be 27 on the 17th. Busy month, also have a sister-in-law who has one tomorrow and her grandson has one on the 7th also. We'll be doing our two on Sunday the 8th.

Have a great evening. Sure hope it starts to warm up soon. By the way, one year we came up to Copper Harbor Mi for a vacation. Really nice except for those no-seeum bugs, I think that's what they called them. Didn't know they were on you until you saw a little trickle of blood running from the hair line.

So unfortunate we have to have tragedies as a part of life on this earth. So sad for your neighbor. So thankful Doug came through. Last Saturday my husband went to the hospital for pain and while we were there they brought a man in from an ambulance and they tried really hard to revive him. When I saw the hospital chaplin I started to cry and also when his wife came back to the ER to say her goodbyes. Come to find out I knew him as he used to go to our church. He was up in years and having problems, in a way it was a blessing for him not to suffer anymore. I cried and didn't know I was crying with a friend. My husband came home that same day, he had tests and everything was looking O.K. He has been living with back pain for years but this time it was too much. The doctors can't do anymore for his back. He was on morphine for awhile. He is doing the best he can. Take care Margaret, will be waiting for the next installment. God Bless

Oh Margaret I love the way you tell your story. Por Chuckie and his poor Mom. I have been reading all your posts but for some reason the last time I came there was a problem leaving comments because of the word verification.

Dear Margaret ~~ Great story but a sad one with the boy's death and your son's scare. I am glad yoou moved from there. Thanks for your comments and I am glad you enjoy the jokes. And I reckon those e mails from God must have gone astray, seeing we didn't get one. I am a little better and the pain is bearable and may still ease some.with a few more capsules. I am sorry your sister fell and now has pain. The fire situation is much better now and the danger has eased and no towns or homes are at risk. That is such a relief. Take great care my friend,
Love, Merle.

What a sad story about Chuckie - especially after losing a kid to leukemia, poor woman. I'm glad that Doug came through his near-tragedy with flying colors, though. Gripping story!

i finally got a chance to come back by and catch up (last post i read was when you got your first job). wow, i missed alot! margaret, i love reading about what your life. once i start reading a post i don't want anyone to disturb me. i have shed tears when things didn't go so well (the early part of your relationship w/ charles, chuckie's death and the close call w/ doug). i felt the happiness when there was good times (almost lost it when i read about your wedding night and the open curtains). if you ever decide to write a book about your life i want to be first in line to buy it. can't wait to read your next post.

Margaret, I guess if we live long enough we all have some sad things happen. I felt so sorry for the neighbor who lost the son. I felt so glad for you to still have yours. Your life story is very interesting.

I don't know if your comment on my blog is for me or Dusty. Just wanted to clarify that Jessie is not my mom, just a blogging friend that is having a tough time right now... I appreciate you coming by...

Good evening, just me again, wanting to thank you for stopping by and wishing Ms Audrey a Happy Birthday. Here's hoping you and Wayne have a wonderful week-end. Sunday we'll be celebrating Audrey and Becky's (our next to the youngest child - she'll be 47) birthday with a family get together here. Hope your weather is nice, we've been having lots of wind the past couple of days.

You are telling a great story, Margaret.

Hi Margaret, You don't write as though the almost loss of your son and the loss of the other boy were so awful yet I am in tears now. Your writing is so matter of fact and that's what I love. Hope you are having a great weekend. ~ L

Wow. I remember when my daughter was little, I used to worry about SIDS all the time. The poor little thing didn't get a good solid sleep till she was well over a year old because i was always going into her bedroom to be sure she was alive and breathing. I'm glad Doug survived - not many do - and that he's doing well now.
