Doggone It

We Need Some Fresh Air, Please
Photo curtosey of emdot

Every summer I really get peeved at what I am about to write on. I love dogs and do not like to see how they are treated in summer months in our town.

First of all, you should not walk them on hot days, after all they have on a fur coat, lets see you wear a heavy coat while walking in the hot weather. Besides sidewalks are hot and burn the dogs feet.

Second, I never see any person carrying a drink for the dog, only for themselves. You could carry a water bottle for them and stop once in a while and squirt a little water in their mouth.

Third, I think it is cruel to make a dog run along side a bike, I never see the person stop to let the dog rest, and most dogs can't stop because they are on a leash. How would you like it if someone put a collar around your neck and made you run along side the bike, and most of the bikes are moving at a pretty good rate. Another thing is the roller blades, dogs are running pretty fast to keep up.

Fourth, Most little dogs need a break by being carried until their legs are rested. I hate to see the dogs pulling their owner in hot weather on different things.

Fifth, The owners could let their dog walk in the grass on the bike paths.

Sixth, I hate seeing dogs left in cars while people shop in the heat.

Seventh, My friend Linda has one, keeping dog's tied up all the time without attention.

These are just some of my pet peeves, let me hear what yours are about this matter. I know that the owners of these dogs love them, but do not take precaution in the hot weather.

Hey Margaret! I totally agree with you. A pet is a member of the family who brings in a lot of joy, it should be treated like one. Little precautions would make things better for our pet:) Thanks for the thought provoking post!Blessings!

I agree with you Margaret, dogs should be protected in the heat, Why, here in the UK 2 POLICEMEN left their police dogs in a car, both dogs died. It grately upset me,

Yvonne.

Sixth, I don't like at all when people leave their dogs tied up to a leash all day in a yard. A neighbor used to do this all of the time until thankfully they moved away. I've often wondered why some people have dogs if they don't intend on spending good time with them. Dogs don't like to just be tied up or kept in a kennel all day - they need a yard to run and play in and people to spend time with them!

Hope you have a blessed weekend,
Linda
(Sorry - I deleted my first comment because I misspelled LEASH. You can tell it's early morning and I'm tired :-)

Abe and I both agree. We can never understand how some people can treat their dogs so badly. But they probably the same idiots that leave their children in a car when it's hot.

Have a great week-end, stay cool.

Interesting post, and I agree. We need to keep in mind that our pets need attention just like our children. I have a dog and a cat. I put the cat out each day on a leash for an hour or two, so he can get his greens and fresh air. I also walk the cat on a leash so he gets exercise. Laying around the house all day like me is not the proper exercise. haha... The dog goes everywhere with us, in the car, truck, and golf cart. He doesn't like being left behind, but on HOT and COLD days, he has to stay home.

Hi Margaret, Excellent post! We have lots of dog walkers in our neighborhood. Fortunately, several homes always have water bowls and battled water available for refills!!! Since it's hot in Southern California, it's a nice relief for the dogs.
Have a great weekend!

Dear Margaret ~~ You always choose good subjects for your posts, and this is no exception. I agree with all you said and people should be more thoughtful towards their pets.
As you know, we are in Winter here and it gets very cold, and yet my neighbors keep one dog tied up all the time. It actually cries with the cold, and iI feel sorry for it. I do not dare interfere as they are Aboriginal and they get away with a lot. I am sure there are plenty of others who do this too, so why have pets if that is all they do with them.

Thanks for your comments and I am glad you enjoyed the jokes etc. Take care, my friend,
Love, Merle.

Hi Margaret,

I completely agree. I think that if you are going to have a pet, then treat it as a pet, and not as simply a possession. An animal gives unconditional love and forgives us our transgressions in the worst of times. That in itself is priceless. So a pet certainly deserves to be treated as a valued family member, rather than an old coat that can be taken out when we feel like it and then tossed aside when it's no longer convenient. They need as much love as they give.

I wonder why people don't give much thought to the well-being of their animals. It only makes sense that pets need fresh water and food on a daily basis. They need protection from the elements in all kinds of weather, just like people do.

It riles me up when I see people who mistreat their animals or are just totally unconscious of the animal's needs.
