Why Do We Honor People?

There may be as many reasons to honor special people, as there are people to honor. Yet, have you ever wondered why we honor people in the first place?

Why do we pause every so often to acknowledge and honor special efforts by special people with appreciation award, or milestones in people's lives?

After all life would go on without special occasions. We would still get up in the morning, go to work, care for the kids.

Perhaps we honor people with recognition programs because, sooner or later, we realize that we don't know how much time we've got here and every day becomes a little more precious. So too, the people we admire become more appreciated.

We honor people retiring, a hero that saves lives, not only in the line of duty, but, because they care enough to risk their lives. We also have every day people that deserve this honor, the unsung heroes of our lives. These people would not take a metal if offered, they are mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, neighbors, friends and the list goes on. So to these people in your lives say "I am Proud of You", thanks for being in my life and caring enough to give.

Thanks Margraet for a wonderful write,
People get honoured for a variety of reasons, some I do wonder why,
I think you say it all in your post.

Very nicely put, Margaret :)

Our family is known for celebrating all milestones in a pretty grand fashion. I'm glad for that. :)

A good post.
Many are noticed and appreciated after they are gone. More often we fail to notice the value of people when they are around.

Hi Margaret ~ Great post as always and we must remember to say a big thank you to those who assist us in any way. And even for a kind word or smile. Some people do s
lot of things for others and never get recognition. Some who do, deserve their awards, and we wonder about some of them.
Thanks for coming by my blog and for your kind wishes for Peter after his eye op. He
is my 74 year old brother, not my son.
Glad you liked the Crabby old man - our kids don't realize that we had lives before they arrived. Glad your computer is going well again my friend. Love, Merle

Loved this post and it is so true that we need to remember and appreciate not only those we love but others in our lives. I love Dusty's world, too. That is a great cartoon and made me laugh.

Hello Margaret...
When I was young and in the Army, in Japan, I was not even aware of the future and never realized in March 1955 I would be home to see my father, a cancer patient, and then in July we would be married and have it last 55 years so far.

I smiled a lot. Still do, but I have less to smile about. Still I thank the good lord for my daily life and the family and my backyard and all the things that keep me going. I smile then. And I smile now. Life is good. It just gets more complicated as I get older.

Unfortunately, most people are not honored. Gosh. How many billions of housewives and mothers are missed each time an honor is handed out? Or men, for that matter.

I try to make this spot better than it was when I got here in 1962. And it is a lot better. I am blessed with wildlife in my small lot and love it.

Hi Margaret, My hero was always my father. He died in 1985 and not a day goes by that I don't think of him. We laughed together a lot and could sit in silence for hours while fishing on the beach at night.
